THIEVES PROPERTY (2015)

Property and possessions in the vicinity of the Thieves Market on Sungei Road, Singapore. Thieves Market is Singapore’s oldest rent-free hawking zone selling recycled and discarded household goods and wares to low income families and labourers. Established since the Japanese Occupation (1942-1944), the market will soon be closed down to make way for the Sungei Road MRT station in 2017. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has rejected relocation proposals from the 200 odd peddlers.

"Shutting down the market will mean taking away a source of income for many elderly folk here. Most of us have little education or are illiterate." Mr Koh Ah Koon, 73, President of the Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods. (Straits Times, 31st July 2014)
